The Spirit of Collaboration, with Camilla & Jamie

Those of you who watched Love Island 2017 will remember the lovely Camilla Thurlow & Jamie Jewitt, runners up of the show. They are considered down to earth, with big hearts, warm personalities, and a desire to do even more amazing charitable work than they’ve already done! And that's certainly what we have experienced when working with them.

After Love Island, Camilla & Jamie went on to start a lifestyle company called Love Jamila. Jamila is an Arabic word meaning beauty - Deep inner beauty, the kind that means you help others, & show compassion.

Camilla contacted us at the end of 2018 after being drawn to our ethics and vision, asking if we would help them develop unique essential oil scents for Love Jamila as well as make candles for them. Not only did they need expertise in scent development, but also in the art of candle making. Of course there was no question about it. We gave them a big yes, because we love working with other socially conscious businesses.

Having already launched a range of natural skincare products, Camilla and Jamie decided to move onto candles, with scents that represented beautiful moments in their journey together <3

All four of us have a vision for businesses that operate ethically, kindly, and that also give back to the global community. At Arya, we support women survivors of war via Women for Women International. At Love Jamila 10% of turnover is donated towards helping refugees across Europe and the Middle East. So our business visions are quite similar - Giving back, and using natural ingredients.

Camilla & Jamie’s idea was to create two scents, named Library & Serendipity, which would remind them of special moments in their story. We met with Camilla & Jamie at our premises in Suffolk, to discuss their vision, and develop scents together. Serendipity represents the twist of fate which brought them together, and Library symbolises their shared love of books.

Once understanding their vision, we set to work developing and testing lots of lovely essential oils blends, to best match the two fragrances. Serendipity is a sweet, romantic scent made up of juniper, ylang ylang, neroli, and patchouli. Library contains a warming blend of cardamom, cedarwood, cinnamon, and frankincense. After lots of hard work from everyone involved, the candles were launched on Valentine's Day 2019.

This scent is designed to capture the magic of losing yourself in a good read, snuggled up by the fire with a Baileys hot chocolate. It’s warm and cosy, with a little bit of spice and spark. The perfect accompaniment to a night spent with adventures dancing through your imagination - just like the ones that first captured our minds, and led to conversations that captured our hearts.

Every time we talk about how we met, we can never really believe it happened – we still feel so very lucky about that little twist of fate! So often, as we got to know each other we would find bizarre little crossovers in our lives, little quirks that we never realised anyone else did until we met each other. This scent is that little spark of magic in a relationship, it’s sweet and romantic, with a sensual undertone.

You may think, 'Why would a candle company make candles for someone else?' That's because we love the spirit of collaboration. We love the designs of these candles, minimal packaging, and the warmth! It was a pleasure to work on these lovely candles, which tell a beautiful story. You can check out the Love Jamila website here, or on Instagram.

The Maura Collection: How Faux Flowers are Better for the Environment

elenor.jpg

At Ayra we believe in the ability of businesses to inspire and help others. Working within the home interiors industry, it can be hard to find companies who reflect our ethos. In today’s blog we turn to Maura Collection, a local supplier of artificial flowers, to find out how artificial flowers can promote more natural practices at home.

A: Thank you for joining us. Tell our readers, in what ways can Artificial flowers help the environment?

M: Thank you for having us! Firstly, we do not try to compete with real flowers. Rather, we see our faux flower arrangements as something that can compliment the ‘real deal’. One of the reasons for going for artificial flowers is that we believe they can help to reduce our impact on the environment and still look realistic and beautiful in their own right. For example, just in terms of how often real flowers need to be replaced, faux flowers have an indefinite shelf life meaning that they last much longer. The impact on the environment is reduced due to this shelf life, or lack thereof, because there is no rush to get them where they need to go. Many of our own suppliers also ship by sea and not by air which again reduces the impact on the environment.

As we all know, very few flowers on the UK market are grown locally and have to be imported from far away places such as Africa or South America where the climate is right all year round for growing. Again, it is this reliance on importation and the huge environmental costs that they may have that makes us say, go artificial! In terms of waste, artificial flowers stay looking good for years with a regular dust whereas fresh flowers have to be replaced at least every week. When they die they are put in the bin (unless you compost) and sent to landfill where they decay and omit methane.

A: Is there still a place for real flowers?

M: We absolutely believe that there is a time and a place for real flowers. There is no denying that there’s a huge demand for fresh flowers, especially on certain days such as Valentines and other such important occasions. However, we urge our clients to consider the impact of fresh flowers as with such ongoing demand, the growers have to keep up constant production which involves pesticides to keep diseases at bay - of course organic options do exist but are out of the reach of many. Naturally, this intensive farming process is not good for the environment or the workers at the flower farms. We still think that for special occasions that real flowers are great, however for dressing your home artificial flower arrangements can not only save you money in the long run but also help the environment.

A: How can we make more eco-friendly choices when it comes to real flowers?

M: We believe that the best solution is to continue to buy fresh flowers but do so less often, and try to buy as local as possible. If you do have the space, cultivating a small cutting garden is rewarding and comes with enormous benefits that aren't just ecological.

A: How do you think faux flowers will coexist with the real option going forward?

M: As with any industry, the market decides. With the world looking to go greener many of our clients are becoming aware of just how great faux flowers can be. We think that the best solution is always a healthy balance. Why not invest in some beautiful realistic faux arrangements that can be used as regular centrepieces for rooms and spaces, buy less fresh and mix them with good artificial greenery and branches.

Arya's 2nd Birthday: From Caterpillar to Butterfly

Arya is 2 years old! And what an exciting time it is for us to be launching a brand new vibrant, vivid look for her. Arya is truly morphing into a beautiful, strong, and compassionate woman.

On Friday 11th November, we are going to be releasing our new look into the world. Arya is coming out of her cocoon, if you will, and what a transformation it will be!

Since founding the business 2 years ago, we, Lina & Jenny, have sponsored EIGHT women via Women for Women International. These women, from countries such as Afghanistan, Rwanda, and South Sudan, have had their lives changed. They have learned about their human rights, health, community and so much more. These women have in turn educated their children and other women in their community - The ripple effect created is immense.

We are so very proud of where our business is heading, and loyal customers such as yourself make it all possible.

Stay tuned to our social media accounts  and on Friday 11th visit our webpage to put your name down to be the first to hear when our highly anticipated new candles will be for sale! (And find out why we've been using so much butterfly symbolism!)

When Friday comes, please share our news far and wide, and help us make a splash!

Arya Then, Arya Now: We Are Transforming

Arya Then, Arya Now: We Are Transforming

Things are going to be changing for Arya. We have big, exciting, game-changing plans, which have been in the works for the past 12 months. It's been a lot of good, hard work but the most difficult part has been keeping all our new designs a secret! Yes, that's right... New designs. We are transforming, like a caterpillar to a butterfly. With a new logo, new candle container, and new packaging, we are well and truly going for it.

Candles, Cakes, & Coffee Breaks: The Magical Feeling of Hygge

Candles, Cakes, & Coffee Breaks: The Magical Feeling of Hygge

Denmark is the happiest country in the world. (I think Scandanavia wins at pretty much everything). 'Hygge' (pronounced hoo-ga) is a Danish concept which is a bit difficult to describe because as ToveMaron Stakkestad has said, "Hygge was never meant to be translated - It was meant to be felt." If we were to try to translate it, we may say 'well-being', or 'cosy', but the essence of hygge goes much deeper. It is all about creating a nice, warm atmosphere, being kind to yourself, and enjoying the little things in life.
