It's one month until International Women's Day and on the 8th March, people all over the globe will come together to celebrate the political, social, and economic achievements of women. As well as celebrating accomplishments, it's an important day for campaigning and highlighting the struggles that so many still face all over the world - Domestic violence, rape, female genital mutilation, a lack of education, body shaming, slave labour - Tragically, the list goes on.
Fortunately, there are thousands of strong female warriors who have felt passionately about an issue that women face, and taken action to make real, positive changes. In honor of International Women's Day, we have chosen 10 inspirational women who have done incredible work, not just for women, but for people from all walks of life. Believe me, it was hard to choose 10, and I was blown away by the stories of so many women, many of whom I'd never heard of before. In our chosen 10, I hope you learn about someone new who makes you feel inspired and empowered.
Every day this week, we are going to share the stories of 2 women. At the end of the week, we would like to hear from you* about which woman you found the most inspirational. The 3 women who get the highest amount of votes will have their names etched on a beautiful frosted white candle, limited edition. These white candles represent all of the women over the years who have fought for women's rights and equality. We will continue to support the work of Women for Women International with these special candles.
*We will be holding a vote starting on Friday 12th February, and every one who votes will be entered into a competition to win one of these limited edition white candles!
We'll be using the hashtag #SheWhoShines, so please get involved and share stories/images/quotes about women who inspire you and make the world a brighter place. Tag us on Twitter so we can re-tweet you: www.twitter.com/aryacandles, or on Facebook: www.facebook.com/aryacandles
I'd like to start our campaign with a quote from one of my personal favourite authors, Clarissa Pinkola Estes, an incredible woman with so much wisdom and soul.
